Tourism

After years of contraction caused by the pandemic, the tourism sector has fully recovered, showing consistent growth both in traveler flows and in destination dynamics. Major sporting events such as the Olympic Games and Euro 2024 have boosted international travel and revitalized local economies, reinforcing the importance of tourism in the global context. However, this growth has brought new challenges — safety has become a central concern, with geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East raising fears.

IPDT – Tourism, in collaboration with the members of its panel Tourism Barometer (an IPDT project that brings together key decision-makers in Portugal’s tourism sector to discuss major industry themes), has identified the 10 travel trends likely to shape the sector in 2025. This outlook reflects expert perspectives and aims to anticipate traveler behavior, helping tourism professionals prepare more targeted strategies for an ever-changing global scenario.

Here are some of the key trends:

Disconnect to reconnect… Nature as the point of balance.
A trend that has been gaining momentum in recent years and is expected to solidify in 2025 is travel to destinations where nature offers a true immersive experience. More than just an escape from daily life, travelers are expected to increasingly seek out activities that allow them to disconnect from routine, challenge their bodies, and reconnect with the natural environment.

More travel throughout the year. A new calendar for tourism.
In 2025, international travel is expected to continue growing. However, a major shift lies in how travel is spread across the year. Travelers are showing greater willingness to explore destinations outside of traditional peak seasons, taking advantage of quieter times and often more affordable prices.

My colleague ChatGPT. AI in tourism — ally, not substitute.
By 2025, AI tools like ChatGPT will have earned the trust of millions of travelers, becoming “trusted companions” in planning and discovering destinations. However, this new “industrial revolution” comes with key caveats. Tourism is, by nature, a people-to-people industry, where human interactions — a warm welcome at a hotel, a chat with a local guide, or the genuine hospitality of a host — are irreplaceable and the true heart of memorable experiences. AI is reshaping how we travel and connect with the world, and it’s essential for the tourism industry to strike a balance. AI tools should be seen as allies that enrich the journey, but never as replacements for the human touch — still the soul of tourism.
